If you own an iPhone 3G, you probably need a case. Keeping any smartphone safe from scuffs and scratches is a chore in itself, so a case makes sense for most users.Today I'm taking a look at the Rocketfish iPhone 3G Silicone Case (MODEL RF-WR441), which is a slim, form fitting skin case designed to protect the iPhone not from cataclysmic damage, but from superficial scrapes and bumps.
I was anxious to test this case because it's one of the slimmest-fitting cases on the market. Unfortunately, its design leaves much to be desired, both from a usability standpoint and in terms of general attractiveness.
Like most skin cases, the Rocketfish iPhone 3G Silicone Case is a simple, fitted piece of material (in this case, silicone, of course) without too much going on with regards to design, other than its shape matching the target device.
That form fitting nature of a skin case is its advantage; slim handsets like the iPhone 3G are made bulkier by traditional cases, and a skin allows you to maintain as much of a device's thinness as possible. In this regard, the Rocketfish Silicone Case is a winner. It provides a smooth, comfortable back and pimpled sides for better traction, all without adding very much bulk.
This is the point where my praise ends, however. The case is loose-fitting for a skin case, with the sections to the right and left side of the screen flapping and catching when you swipe your finger from left to right or vice versa. It also slides around on the face of the device a bit too much, which makes the iPhone, at times, feel like it's squirming in its skin.
There are openings in the case which allow you to access the Hold button, the volume rocker, etc., but the looseness here also proves to be a hindrance, sometimes making it difficult to work the hardware controls. It would have been a much better design direction to cover these controls with raised sections of the skin for pass-through control; this would have not only added to the ease of use of the case, but its overall stability as well.
Although it would be of little consequence if the case were a winner overall, there's another aspect of the Rocketfish Silicone Case which bugs me - it has a white logo on the lower right face of the skin. I would have preferred the logo be on the back of the unit where I don't have to look at it all day. A small gripe, to be sure, but as long as I'm sharing...
